Surrounding

Plaza Vieja (Old Square) the most beautiful of Havana's many squares, with all its fine magnificent architecture is only a block away from Hostal Maria Sury. The plaza and its surroundings are also one of the seven consejos populares (wards) of the municipality of Old Havana.

The plaza was originally called Plaza Nueva (New Square). It emerged as an open space in 1559.

Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights, and fiestas - all witnessed by Havana's wealthiest citizens, who looked on from their balconies.

Havana was founded by the Spanish 16th of November 1519 in the natural harbor of the Bay of Havana.

It became a stopping point for the treasure laden Spanish galleons on the crossing between the New World and the Old World. In the 17th century, it was one of the main shipbuilding centers.

The city was built in baroque and neoclassical styles. Many buildings have fallen into ruin in the latter half of the 20th century, but a number are being restored.

The El Capitolio Nacional (National Capitol of Cuba) is one of the most emblematic buildings in Havana. This majestic construction, located just a short walk from Hostal Maria Sury, is similar to that in Washington D.C. But a meter higher, a meter wider, and a meter longer, as well as much more rich in detail. It was started to be built by Cuban president Gerardo Machado in 1926 supported by USA.

To finish its construction they needed more than 5000 workers, 3 years, 3 months and 20 days; as well as approximately 17 millions of US dollars.

The Bacardi Building was designed to be the headquarters for the Bacardi Rum Company. It was nationalized by the Castro government in the early 1960s.

The interior retains the original decorations in marble and granite. It is regarded as one of the finest Art Deco buildings in Latin America.
